It’s very important to take a class. Make sure it is a gentle yoga class. Ask if you can observe one session if you’re uneasy about it.

I took it for the first time a couple years ago and it was wonderful. I truly felt better. The instructor was very good and patient.

Once you have taken the class try to get some visuals, pictures etc. to keep up your routine at home. I do just a few every day because I cannot remember all of them and we did not get anything with pictures.

    Best wishes.

Yoga is great for relaxation, energising, stretching and as a general personal practice for “re-balancing”. Check with your doctor (GP) if it’s suitable for you if you’re not sure.

If you decide to go ahead with yoga, the main thing to remember: it’s your *personal* practice and ability that’s important, so only do what you feel comfortable with and don’t try to rush to the complex moves too quickly or copy other people.

There are different types of yoga, so check them out – some are very static (moves are simple and done individually or in steps), others are more dynamic (flowing through a series of moves).

Weight is not an issue providing your joints can cope with it and your balance is ok. Otherwise you might want to start with predominantly floor work and standing work on both feet.

It may help your asthma as yoga concentrates on using the breath as part of the practice – but make sure you continue to use your medication as prescribed by your doctor.

Flexibility – that will improve the longer you do yoga.

Key tips? If it hurts, don’t do it! And don’t “bounce” the stretch – move into it, to a comfortable but demanding position, and hold it as instructed.
KEEP BREATHING! Never hold your breath during yoga.
Keep hydrated – a glass or small bottle of water nearby during the session is a good idea. But don’t drink too much right beforehand or you’ll have to rush off to the loo mid-session.
Listen to your instructor, and discuss with the instructor any concerns you might have.

Good luck with your practice – I hope you enjoy it and you achieve your goals!
